What a classic notion this one is - the idea that we’ll be taxed for having a water tank. Any party who tried to pull that one off would be commiting political suicide. The opposite approach is needed: there should be far greater incentives to install water tanks, along with solar hot water heating and solar panels. If one in every 30 houses in Melbourne had solar panels generating power and feeding excess back into the grid there would have been no power crisis on Tuesday. At present you can set the panels up for less than $5000 using existing incentives - do that and slash or obliterate your electricity bills. But even $5000 is too much for many people and it would take maybe 8 to 12 years to get your money back - so we should have concessions or tax incentives that would bring it down to around say $2000. At that rate you’d get a huge take-up. Yes it would cost the govt big bikkies but look at the costs of setting up new power stations and of course the subsequent environmental issues. Tremendous opportunities have been squandered over the past 20 years in terms of governments failing to require environmentally friendly house design and solar hot water heating in new homes: we’ve started now but there is a long way to go.
Cinema complexes these days are often generic, soulless sort of places. But for a completely different experience try the Westgarth Cinema, one of the few film venues retaining some old-fashioned character - but thankfully they have updated to seats. Indeed the whole place has been renovated, except for the facade. The renovations have highlighted the fantastic Art Deco features, and they’ve managed to lose the mustiness that once characterised the atmosphere there.

Everest Indian Restaurant
At a time when most suburban restaurants seem to be falling over themselves to be trendy and casual, it’s good to see there are still some around that still go for high levels of service, decor and furnishings - not too mention good tucker.
That’s what the Everest is all about - linen tablecloths, well dressed and pleasant staff sans “inner urban restaurant attitude'’ and a great range of regional cuisine. Don’t miss the chicken marcani.
There is a wine bar attached to the Everest but give it a miss - like the top of Mount Everest it has little atmosphere.

Time and Relative Dimensions in Westgarth. When we head out it’s often: Denn again

Great range of meals from snack size to main at this place, but a special favourite is the range of small servings on offer, allowing diners to mix and match. A bit like a tapas bar in that sense, but this place is also a fairly flash full-blown restauarant. It has a sort of Tardis quality - bigger inside than it appears on the outside, goes back a long way and has a second level - but the decor is rather warmer than the Dr Who set. Staff are also much friendlier than the sci fi monsters who sometimes serve at inner northern restaurants. To continue the sci fi link in a rather loose fashion, it’s just down the road from the marvellous, renovated Westgarth Cinema. So Denn is a great place for before or after the movies - but then it’s really only one of many great little places along that stretch of High St, Westgarth these days.
