Atonement - film

Atonement. Great film, pretty much as good as the book. Set in the 30s and telling the story of how a young girl and a young man make some massive mistakes. A dress in this film was named “best dress ever in the movies'’, which is bollocks, although it’s certainly a nice outfit. Not one for those who are offended by swear words, as one of those words gets a big run.

You know I never even noticed the swear words, they’re so commonly used these days.

I felt the film was confusing somewhat in the way it jumped from different time zones forward, then partly back from the original scene….I didn’t think I was going to like it at all for the first half hour and then it fell into place….by the end of it, I was surprisingly dry eyed and full of futile moral outrage at how it ended….It reinforced my belief that we are always accountable for our actions - eventually…. I had thought it really a film for women to appreciate but that one magnificent scene would more than satisfy the male’s need for “action”……A good film for the scenery, the period dressing but most of all, its message…

This could have been a great film had it been one hour shorter; less ’stagey’ stage sets; less melodrama and stereotyping of characters. I found it most disappointing and even ‘boring’ in parts! Also the battle scenes of Dunkirk and the beaches were unconvincing - ie. long panning camera shots over carefully choreographed backdrops with plenty of smoke for effect, were in my eyes a ‘trivialisation’ of what one assumes really occured. In the end I left the theatre glad that it was over and certainly unmoved. As to theme, if anyone remembers ‘The go-between’ where similar issues were depicted, this succeeded because the characters were far more ‘real’ and ‘believable’!

on Harry, it was a film….a make believe…..now that you mention it I did look at my watch twice during its screening though…I didn’t think the filmmaker would have any money left for real guns and dramatic war material after all the money spent on clothes and backdrops for the other scenes. I never expected Dunkirk to be screened in all its genuine ugliness because it was a period when sensitivities were still important in society. For real blood and gore I stay away from CSI…
