Smoking should just be banned everywhere.

Smoking should just be banned everywhere. Making it illegal would go a long way towards reducing the massive number of deaths associated with it. I’m not so naive as to believe banning it would stop it altogether - of course there would be many breaking the law, as with dope, but they would be driven underground and it would make tobacco much harder to get. Think of the misery that would be avoided.

Does your suggestion also include one’s own home? One’s car, especially when driving alone? If so, then let’s ban all adultery, since this also leads to ‘problems’; let’s ban all alcohol, all rap music, etc. etc. I smoke and since tobacco is not an illegal product, I have made an ‘informed choice’ to continue smoking. I do not smoke in friends’ houses, nor in their cars, nor around babies! I know the risks but this is my choice in exactly the same way that other lifestyles carry their own particular risks.

Oh if we lived in the ideal world.

Yes Fed, I’d ban it everywhere, put it in the same category as dope or the heavy drugs. Thing is, smokers may only think they are harming themselves but very few actually know how dreadful is the fate that awaits them, or choose to ignore it, which means their informed consent is nothing of the sort because in fact most are in a state of ignorance or denial.
Smokers also clog up hospital beds and other medical services, so their actions do damage society as a whole.
We need drastic action to put a dint in the number of young people taking up this dangerous habit.
There are so many other reasons for banning it. The enviro damage caused by the waste associated with butts, the stink of stale smoke it leaves, the fact that it is so addictive…

Now despite being a non-smoker, I disagree there. I think both tobacco smoking and marijuana smoking should be legal, but limited to designated areas where people who choose to smoke can do so without damaging the lungs of others.

It should be our choice whether we want to smoke or not, just like with other possibly health-damaging behaviours such as drinking alcohol and eating junk food. We can’t very well ban everything that harms us humans or life would be half as good and twice as long! In this day and age, smokers are well aware of the risks of their habit, and their decision to continue smoking is an informed one. Some people may find a shorter life with cigarettes preferable to a long life without them. Who are we to say which is better?

Making smoking illegal will only cause tobacco to become the next “gateway drug” to harder drugs, because all the already-addicted smokers will be forced to go to dealers to get their fix. Same story with marijuana - if it was legal like alcohol, people wanting to try such a non-addictive and mostly harmless drug would not be exposed to the whole “drug dealing” scene where they are in contact with addictive and dangerous drugs like ice, heroin and cocaine.

Smoking rates have already declined to 1/3 what they were in 1945… and if further deterrence is needed, a price rise is a much more subtle and effective way to stop the kids taking up smoking in the first place, and will help pay the costs of the health burden.

Sorry. With the money the Governments get from cigarette taxes, I think you have about as much hope as Australia achieving a 25% reduction on 1990 emmissions by 2020.

Stone them! No no :-) just kidding, ban it? Maybe; no matter how nicely you ask smokers to light up far away from non-smokers or dispose of their butts responsibly, many of them will not cooperate, especially thugs.

people with alcohol problems also clog up hospital beds. so sorry Nook Nook, if your line of thinking is accepted, you may have just enjoyed your last beer or glass of wine.

cars also pollute the air. Let’s ban them. It will now take you one hour to get to your local shops by electrified public transport to do your weekly grocery shopping. But think of all the lives we’ll save because it will take hoons off the road.

let’s ban smoking. now tobacco dealers can fill their pockets with money supplying nicotine addicts with their fix. Dealers who are caught then clog up the already full court system. And now Nook Nook and everyone else will have to pay more in tax to make up the shortfall since cigarette taxes no longer exist.

let’s ban medicines. Yes, they fix your ailment, but gee whiz those side effects are disastrous. Better to be sick than be cured and suffer from extra hair growth.

let’s fence off beaches. can’t trust anyone going for a swim because they may drown.

come to think of it, let’s ban living. because every time we walk out the front door we run the risk of losing our life and that of others.

banning is not the answer to anything. people will still do whatever is banned. it’s just the nature of life. there will be the people who abide by the ban, and there are those that choose to ignore it.

smoking has, is and always will be a part of life. accept it. get over it.

i’m off to have a smoke.

Obviously fedup doesn’t know that smoking when driving has the same dangers as driving over .05 There is plenty of research to show night time single vehicle smashes usually happen to smokers as well as drinkers. In fact smaking and drinking really does mean a driver is “blind drumnk” because smoking causes the reaction of the pupils to slow down, which means after being blinded at night by on- coming headlights, a smoker is actually blind for 2 or 3 seconds before the pupils start to open up again. This has been known since the 1960s but governments are too scared to do anything about it, because they know it would be almost impossible to enforce a no smoke and drive rule.

smoking is one’s choice, if you takeaway smoing it’s like taking away peoples freedom of choice. i don’t smoke myself but don’t care if it is done around me, and face it you have to die of something!!! If its not smoking it would be processed foods or alcohol you pick
