Westgarth Cinema

Cinema complexes these days are often generic, soulless sort of places.  But for a completely different experience try the Westgarth Cinema, one of the few film venues retaining some old-fashioned character - but thankfully they have updated to seats. Indeed the whole place has been renovated, except for the facade. The renovations have highlighted the fantastic Art Deco features, and they’ve managed to lose the mustiness that once characterised the atmosphere there.

Many a time friends and I would visit the Westgarth for their Sunday double feature when it was the Valhalla. One memorable film was seeing Salvador Dali’s Un Chien Andalou only to have an attack of the giggles made worse by desperately trying to be quiet. I guess it didn’t help that we’d spent all afternoon at the All Nations Bar in Richmond.
No doubt they have turfed out those couches that were at the back of the cinema for those chairs with drink holders.

Yeah, they are going gangbusters now. Went on Sat night to see The Queen (not bad) and the place was packed - they even had to have allocated seating! The local paper, The Northcote Leader, had a p1 lead on it, saying how the renovation has lifted the whole shopping strip, with all the restaurants and cafes getting extra trade. My only gripe is with the facade, which is still dirty and crappy, with the veranda a bit smashed up. Hopefully they’ll clean it up.

Apparently there’s a similar lounge-style nook of a cranny cinema in Yarraville

That’s the Sun Theatre at 8 Ballarat St. Mainly new releases these days but they might still do some arthouse stuff.
